Water Heater Replacement & Installation in Longmont, CO
When repairs stop making sense, we help you choose the right new water heater, install it to code and back it with our One Year Test Drive.
The Right New Water Heater, Installed Right
Most tank water heaters give 8 to 12 years of service, and hard Front Range water tends to push them toward the shorter end. If yours is in that range and showing its age, a new unit is often the smarter investment than another repair. The trick is choosing well: the right fuel, the right capacity, and the right type for how your household actually uses hot water.
M&M Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical has handled water heater installation for Longmont families since 1996. We replace gas and electric tank heaters, convert homes to tankless, and install heat pump water heaters for homeowners who want the lowest operating cost. Every installation includes the code details that protect your home and your warranty: a thermal expansion tank where your plumbing system calls for it, correct venting and combustion air, a properly routed relief valve discharge, a drain pan where required, and a permit and inspection when your jurisdiction asks for one.
You get a free in-home estimate with upfront pricing, financing on new equipment, and our One Year Test Drive. If you are not completely happy with your new water heater in the first year, we make it right, up to removing it and refunding in full. Need a fix rather than a swap? See our water heater repair page. Leaning tankless? There is a dedicated tankless water heater page too.
Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Water Heater
One of these alone may be worth a repair. Two or more usually tip the scale toward replacement.
It Is 10 or More Years Old
Age is the biggest predictor of tank failure. Past the 10-year mark, a repair buys time on a unit that is statistically close to the end, and a planned replacement beats an emergency one.
The Tank Itself Is Leaking
Drips from a fitting or valve can be fixed. Water seeping from the tank body means the steel has corroded through, and there is no repair for that. Replace it before it lets go.
Repairs Keep Adding Up
A second or third repair in a couple of years is money going into a unit with little life left. We will show you the repair quote next to the replacement price so you can compare honestly.
Rising Bills, Slower Recovery
Scale on the tank bottom insulates the water from the burner, so the heater runs longer to do the same job. A new high-efficiency unit on softened water reverses that trend.
Your Household Outgrew It
A finished basement, a new bathroom or a growing family can leave a 40-gallon tank running out every morning. Replacement is the moment to size up or go tankless.
Rust in the Hot Water
If replacing the anode rod does not clear up rusty hot water, corrosion has moved to the tank lining. That is a replacement signal, not a repair.
Which Water Heater Should You Install?
Each has a clear best use. We will help you weigh upfront cost, operating cost and how your home is set up.
Conventional Tank
Stores and keeps a set volume of water hot. Lowest upfront cost and the simplest like-for-like replacement, available in gas and electric.
- Lowest installed cost
- Fast swap with existing connections
- Gas or electric, many capacities
- Benefits most from a water softener
Tankless
Heats water only on demand, so there is no standby loss and no tank to leak. Wall-mounted and compact, with hot water that does not run out.
- Endless hot water for back-to-back use
- Frees up floor space
- Higher efficiency than a standard tank
- May need gas line and venting upgrades
Heat Pump (Hybrid)
Moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank instead of generating it, using far less electricity than a standard electric heater. Needs room to breathe.
- Lowest operating cost of the three
- All-electric, no combustion or venting
- Needs an open, unconditioned space
- Ask about available utility rebates

Water Heater Replacement Questions, Answered
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
A good rule of thumb: if the unit is under 8 years old and the fix is a single part, repair. If it is over 10, leaking from the tank, or has needed more than one repair recently, replace. Between those points it comes down to the repair cost relative to a new unit and how much longer you expect to be in the home. We lay both numbers side by side so the decision is yours.
What size water heater does my home need?
For a tank, it depends on how many people and fixtures use hot water at the same time during your busiest hour, which is why two homes with the same number of bedrooms can need different capacities. For tankless, sizing is about flow rate and how far the unit must raise the temperature of Longmont's cold winter water. We calculate both during the estimate rather than guessing.
Do I need an expansion tank with a new water heater?
If your home has a pressure-reducing valve, backflow preventer or check valve on the main line, your plumbing is a closed system and heated water has nowhere to expand. That pressure stresses the tank and causes the relief valve to drip. Current plumbing codes generally require an expansion tank in that situation, and we include one whenever your system calls for it.
Is a heat pump water heater a good choice in Colorado?
It can be an excellent one. Heat pump water heaters use a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank. They need a good volume of surrounding air and work best in a space that stays reasonably warm, such as a basement or utility room. Keep in mind they cool the room they sit in. Ask about available utility rebates, which can make the upfront cost more comfortable.
How long does water heater installation take?
A straightforward tank-for-tank replacement is typically completed in a few hours, and most homes have hot water again the same day. Tankless conversions and heat pump installations take longer because of gas line, venting, electrical or condensate work. We give you a realistic timeline with your estimate and schedule the work when it is convenient for you.
What does the One Year Test Drive cover on a new water heater?
It applies to new equipment installations. If at any point in the first year you are not 100% happy with your new water heater for any reason, M&M will make it right, whether that means adjusting it, exchanging the equipment or removing it and refunding your money in full. Conditions may apply, and we will explain the details before you commit.
