Stop Hard Water Before It Reaches Your Fixtures

Hard water is not dangerous, but it is expensive. The calcium and magnesium dissolved in many Front Range water supplies come out of solution every time water is heated or evaporates, leaving scale on showerheads, inside pipes and at the bottom of your water heater. Over the years that buildup shortens appliance life, dulls laundry and makes every bar of soap work harder.

A water softener fixes the problem at the source. Installed where the main line enters your home, a salt-based softener swaps hardness minerals for a trace of sodium through ion exchange, so the water that reaches your faucets, dishwasher and water heater is genuinely soft. Prefer to skip the salt? A salt-free conditioner does not remove minerals, but it changes them so they are far less likely to stick to surfaces. We will explain the trade-offs honestly and recommend what fits your household, your space and your budget.

M&M Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical has been family-owned in Longmont since 1996. Our licensed plumbers handle new softener installation, repair of all makes and models, and replacement of worn-out units, with upfront pricing before any work begins. Not sure whether softening or filtration is what you need? Start at our water treatment overview, or reach out and we will help you figure it out.

Water Softener Problems We Solve

Whether you have never had a softener or your current one is misbehaving, these are the signs it is time to call.

Scale Is Back

Spots on dishes and crust on fixtures returning after years of soft water usually means the softener is not regenerating properly, the resin is exhausted or the settings have drifted.

Salt Bridge or Mushy Salt

A hard crust can form in the brine tank, leaving an air gap below so the system cannot make brine. The tank looks full, but the softener quietly stops working.

Constant Regeneration or Running to Drain

A softener that cycles too often or never stops sending water down the drain wastes water and salt. A stuck valve, bad timer or failed control head is the usual cause.

Low Water Pressure

Fouled resin, a clogged injector or a unit sized too small for the home can choke flow. We find out whether a cleaning, a part or a properly sized replacement is the fix.

Salty-Tasting Water

Water should never taste like salt. If it does, the rinse cycle is not completing, the drain line is restricted or the brine float is stuck. This is a quick repair when caught early.

Aging or Inefficient Unit

Many softeners give 10 to 15 years of service before resin wears out and repairs stop making sense. Newer metered units regenerate based on actual use, saving salt and water.

  • Metered regeneration instead of a fixed timer
  • Sized for your household and hardness level
  • Bypass valve for easy service
  • Covered by our One Year Test Drive
Salt vs. Salt-Free

Softener or Conditioner: What Is the Difference?

Both reduce scale, but only one makes water truly soft. Here is how they compare in plain terms.

Salt-Free Water Conditioner

Alters hardness minerals so they are less likely to bond to surfaces. Minerals stay in the water, so there is no soft feel, but scale is reduced with almost no upkeep.

  • No salt, no brine tank, no drain line
  • Low maintenance and compact footprint
  • Good fit where sodium or discharge is a concern
  • Does not remove minerals or soften the water

Our licensed plumbers install the softener with a bypass valve and a proper drain, or complete the repair with quality parts. We keep the job site tidy.

M & M has been my go-to HVAC company since 2021, when they helped us choose and install a new furnace along with a complete heating and air conditioning system. The entire process was easy, and the new system made our home much more comfortable. Since then, they’ve been the only company I recommend to friends and family whenever they need heating, cooling work. It’s hard to find a company that’s consistently reliable, but M & M has always delivered. Their team is always prompt, communicates well, and keeps me updated by text/email throughout appointments, which I really appreciate. It’s the little things like that, combined with the quality of their work, that make them stand out. If you’re looking for an honest, dependable HVAC company that genuinely takes care of its customers I highly recommend M & M.

Highly recommend M&M. I used them for both plumbing and electrical and experienced great customer service. The front desk was easy to work with for scheduling and payments. My plumbing technician David T. was excellent, communicating with me throughout the entire process and giving me the ability to weigh in on decisions that needed to be made. My electrical technician was Joey and he was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, and also continued to communicate throughout the entire job to make sure I was being included in decisions and able to give clarification when needed to make sure everything I needed done was being done. I could not recommend David and Joey highly enough!

AJ and his trainee were fantastic. They were knowledgeable, gracious, respectful, and at the top of their game. They asked all the right questions, answered every one of mine, and took the time to explain my options without any pressure. I’ve only had pleasurable experiences with M&M, and this visit was no exception. If this is the standard they hold their team to, they’re doing it right. Highly recommend.

Water Softener Questions, Answered

How do I know if I need a water softener in Longmont?

Look for white scale on faucets and showerheads, spots on glassware that will not rinse away, dry or itchy skin after showers, and soap that does not lather well. Those are hard water symptoms. Many Front Range homes see at least moderate hardness, and checking your water takes minutes. If the signs are there, a softener will pay for itself in fewer appliance problems and less cleaning.

Is softened water safe to drink?

For most people, yes. A salt-based softener adds a small amount of sodium in proportion to how hard the water was, far less than most foods. If someone in your home is on a strict sodium-restricted diet, we can leave a hard water tap for drinking, add a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink, or recommend a salt-free conditioner instead.

Where does a water softener get installed?

On the main water line where it enters the home, usually in a utility room, basement or garage, ahead of the water heater so hot water is protected too. The unit needs a drain for regeneration and a standard outlet. We also add a bypass valve so you can isolate the softener for service without shutting off water to the house.

Can you repair my existing softener, or do I need a new one?

We repair all makes and models. Many issues, such as a salt bridge, stuck float, failed timer or clogged injector, are straightforward fixes. When the resin bed is exhausted or the control valve has failed on an older unit, replacement is often the better value. We will give you an honest assessment and upfront pricing for both options.

What is the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?

A softener removes hardness minerals through ion exchange, which is why the water feels different and scale truly stops. A salt-free conditioner leaves the minerals in place but changes their form so they are less likely to cling to pipes and fixtures. Conditioners need almost no maintenance, but they do not deliver soft water. We will help you decide which matters more for your home.

Will a softener help my water heater and other appliances?

Significantly. Scale is one of the main reasons tank water heaters rumble, lose efficiency and fail early, and it is the top maintenance headache for tankless units. Softened water also helps dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers and faucet cartridges last longer. If you are planning a new water heater, installing a softener at the same time is a smart pairing.
