Heat Pump Installation & Repair in Longmont, CO
One system that heats in winter and cools in summer. Today's cold-climate heat pumps are built for the Front Range, and we install, repair and maintain them all.
Heat Pumps That Actually Work in a Longmont Winter
For years the knock on heat pumps was that they gave up when the temperature really dropped. That is no longer true. Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat well below zero, and variable-speed models adjust their output to match the weather instead of blasting on and off. In summer the same unit runs in reverse and cools the house, which is why many Front Range homeowners are replacing a furnace and air conditioner with a single system.
M&M Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical has installed, repaired and maintained heat pumps across Longmont and the Front Range since 1996. Our NATE-certified technicians help you decide between an all-electric heat pump and a dual-fuel system that pairs the heat pump with a gas furnace. In a dual-fuel setup the heat pump handles most of the season efficiently, and the furnace takes over automatically during the deepest cold snaps. For many homes here, that combination delivers the lowest operating cost and the most peace of mind.
Already have a heat pump that is icing up, blowing cool air or running up the electric bill? We repair all makes and models, 24/7, with upfront pricing and no overtime rates. New heat pump installations are backed by our One Year Test Drive, financing is available, and we will point you to any available utility rebates. Because a heat pump is also your air conditioner, see our cooling services for the summer side of the story.
Common Heat Pump Problems We Fix
Heat pumps have a few failure modes a furnace does not. Here is what we see most often on the Front Range.
Outdoor Unit Frozen Solid
Light frost is normal and the defrost cycle clears it. A unit encased in ice means the defrost control, sensor or reversing valve has failed, or airflow is blocked. Running it that way damages the compressor.
Blowing Cool Air in Heating Mode
Often a low refrigerant charge from a leak, a stuck reversing valve or a thermostat set to the wrong mode. Heat pump supply air is naturally milder than furnace air, but it should never feel cold.
Electric Bill Suddenly Spiked
If the backup electric heat strips are running constantly, something is wrong with the heat pump or its controls. Auxiliary heat is meant for defrost and extreme cold, not every day.
Will Not Switch Between Heating and Cooling
A failed reversing valve or its solenoid leaves the system stuck in one mode. On dual-fuel systems, a changeover problem can also keep the furnace from taking over when it should.
Outdoor Fan Not Spinning or Loud
A failed fan motor, capacitor or debris in the unit stops heat exchange outdoors. Grinding or rattling from the outdoor cabinet is a sign to shut it off and call before the compressor is harmed.
Short Cycling or Never Shutting Off
Both point to a mismatch between the system and the house: wrong sizing, a failing thermostat, a dirty filter or a refrigerant issue. We diagnose the cause rather than just resetting it.
All-Electric vs. Dual-Fuel Heat Pump
Both are excellent choices on the Front Range. The right one depends on your home, your gas service and how you want to handle the coldest nights.
All-Electric Cold-Climate Heat Pump
A single system handles heating and cooling with no gas connection. Cold-climate models are rated to keep heating in sub-zero weather, with electric backup strips for extremes.
- No gas line or combustion in the home
- Replaces both furnace and A/C
- Variable-speed models for steady comfort
- Good fit for homes without gas service
- Pairs well with solar
Dual-Fuel Heat Pump + Gas Furnace
The heat pump carries most of the season at low cost, and the furnace takes over automatically when temperatures drop past the point where gas is cheaper or faster.
- Lowest operating cost across the full season
- Furnace backup for sub-zero stretches
- Keeps your existing furnace if it is in good shape
- Smart thermostat manages the changeover
- Reliable heat during power or grid strain
The M&M Difference
Heat pumps reward careful design and setup. That is where nearly 30 years of local experience pays off.
NATE-Certified Heat Pump Technicians
Refrigerant charging, defrost controls and dual-fuel changeover settings are where heat pump installs go wrong. Our licensed, insured, NATE-certified team gets them right on day one.
Sized for Elevation and Climate
We run a load calculation for your home and select equipment rated for cold-climate performance at Longmont's elevation, so the system keeps up in January and does not run constantly on backup heat.
One Year Test Drive on New Installs
If you are not 100% happy with your new heat pump for any reason in the first year, we make it right, up to exchanging it or removing it and refunding your money in full. Conditions may apply.
24/7 Repair, All Brands, No Overtime
Whether we installed your heat pump or not, we repair it around the clock at the same upfront price, nights and weekends included. We also offer a free second opinion on any diagnosis.
Our 4-Step Process
How a heat pump installation works with M&M, from first visit to first season.
Home Assessment and Load Calculation
We look at your home's size, insulation, ductwork, electrical panel and existing furnace, then calculate the heating and cooling load to size the system correctly.
Choose All-Electric or Dual-Fuel
We explain the options in plain terms, with upfront pricing for each, financing details and any available utility rebates. You pick what fits your home and budget.
Professional Installation
Our crew sets the outdoor and indoor units, runs and pressure-tests refrigerant lines, makes electrical connections and configures the thermostat and changeover settings.
Startup, Walkthrough and Follow-Up
We commission the system, verify refrigerant charge and airflow, show you how to use it and set you up with maintenance so it performs for years. Your One Year Test Drive starts now.
Heat Pump Questions From Front Range Homeowners
Do heat pumps really work in Colorado winters?
Yes, provided you install a cold-climate model sized for your home. Older heat pumps lost most of their capacity in freezing weather, but current cold-climate units are designed to keep heating well below zero. For the handful of nights each winter when temperatures get extreme, a dual-fuel system hands off to a gas furnace, and all-electric systems use backup heat strips. Either way, your house stays warm.
What is a dual-fuel system?
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating during mild and moderately cold weather, which is most of the Front Range season, because it moves heat rather than generating it and costs less to run. When outdoor temperatures drop below a set point, the thermostat switches to the furnace. You get the efficiency of a heat pump and the raw heating power of gas when you need it.
Can a heat pump replace both my furnace and air conditioner?
It can. A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse, so one outdoor unit and one indoor air handler cover both seasons. If your furnace is near the end of its life, replacing it and the A/C with a single heat pump system often makes sense. If your furnace is newer and healthy, keeping it as the backup in a dual-fuel setup is usually the smarter path.
Why is my heat pump covered in frost?
A thin layer of frost on the outdoor coil during cold, damp weather is normal, and the unit runs a defrost cycle periodically to clear it. Thick ice that does not go away, ice on the top of the unit or ice building up on the refrigerant lines means something has failed, such as the defrost sensor, the reversing valve or a low refrigerant charge. Shut the system off and call us before the compressor is damaged.
How often does a heat pump need maintenance?
Because it works year-round, a heat pump should be serviced twice a year, once before heating season and once before cooling season. Maintenance includes checking refrigerant charge, cleaning coils, testing the defrost cycle and reversing valve, inspecting electrical components and verifying thermostat settings. Our Loyalty Club Membership covers two tune-ups a year, which lines up perfectly with a heat pump's schedule.
Are there rebates for installing a heat pump?
Utility rebate programs for high-efficiency heat pumps change from year to year. We stay current on what is available locally and will tell you what your project may qualify for during the estimate. Financing is also available on new equipment, so we can put together a monthly cost that reflects any rebates you receive.
